Hi-Fi Systems Explained
Hi-fi system is the assembly of audio/video components like CD players, DVD players, MP3 players, television set, digital surround sound speakers and satellite TV receiver designed to reproduce high quality images and sounds of the original recording. Hi-fi system equipment is not only successful in high quality reproduction of sound, but also reduces noise or distortion to minimal level while playback. Which is why, they offer better stereo sound quality and audio experience to the listeners.

The term ‘hi-fi’ system of audio and visual components initially referred to accurate reproduction of original sound without noise or distortion, as specified by DIN 45500 standard in nineteen seventies. However, three decades later, the hi-fi system has become a broader term that used to refer to any audio equipment of the highest quality.
Today’s hi-fi systems are made up of the same components that a typical home theater use - DVD, television, CD player and surround sound speakers. One of the advantages of the high fidelity system is their affordable prices when compared with expensive home theater systems. The customer hi-fi systems allow the music enthusiasts to select individual component of their own preference and build a hi-fi system of their own. It is not necessary that you buy all the components at the same time. This makes the upgrading of your hi-fi system simpler and easier.
There are three stages in a hi-fi system:
- The source or music playback device
- The amplification of sound signals done by a set of amplifiers.
- The loud speakers which convert the amplified signals into sound
Hi-fi systems should have some playback device like CD player or DVD player or Television etc. Although most hi-fi systems come with a CD player or a universal player that can play various sound formats like CD, DVD, DVD-A etc.
Next, during the amplification process, the amplifiers perform two functions. They have controls that allow you to adjust the volume. Secondly, they enhance the sound effects which are vital for true high fidelity audio experience.
Lastly, there is a set of speakers that receive the electric signals and convert them into sound. For a hi-fi system, you need at least two speakers. Finally, you also need interconnects and speaker wires to connect all the components of the hi-fi system.
There are many types of hi-fi systems based on their design, output power and what functions & features they come with:
Midi hi-fi systems are assembled units of various components like twin cassette player and a CD player. The larger models usually give higher output while the smaller models with lower output are also available.

JVC Mini hi-fi system
Mini hi-fi systems come in two designs – multiple components integrated into single unit or components system. Their components are not as large as midi hi-fi systems so need much less place than the bulky midi systems.

Panasonic Micro hi-fi system
Micro hi-fi systems are compact and come with components built into single unit. They usually provide much lower output but they are quite convenient to move around in your home.
